Nine Movement Principles Every Midlifer (who wants to feel fantastic in their body) Must Know

Three Class Mini-Series with Embodied Fitness Specialist Ariel Kiley

Want to take up a new exercise regimen?

Wait.

Planning a weekend hike to a nearby peak?

Wait.

Dropping down on the floor to play with the kids (or the kitties)?

WAIT.

After working with bodies from all phases of life for the past 15+ years, I have identified nine essential principles to moving your body well and preventing aches, pains and injuries.

Most people have never been taught these principles — and it shows up in their bodies over time.

When you know these movement principles it's possible to...

Preserve Your Joints

Exercise regularly without wear, tear and repetitive stress on joints/tendons/ligaments

Avoid Pain & Strain

Take a long walk, bike ride, jog, horseback ride, hike or dance the night away without ankle, knee, neck or back pain

Live Life Fully

Travel the world, ride on planes, trains & automobiles, roam cobblestoned streets, and live life to its fullest, for years to come.

You have so much more life to live! Preserving your body should be top priority.

The real deal: You're already doing lots of movement reps each day

Make sure you're doing them right

For the earlier part of our lives we can get away with a lot and it doesn't lead to body breakdown. But this changes with time, and repetitions.

Because even if you don't formally exercise, you still do tons of reps each day...

Think about it:

  • You take thousands of steps a day
  • You sit down and stand up over and over
  • You reach, you twist, you lift, you bend, you carry

Every single day, you're already racking up rep after rep after rep of a variety of types  of movements.

Without proper biomechanics, these daily movements lead to pain, strain, or injury.

So the question is — are you moving well in daily life?

Or are you compounding poor movement habits?

If you've never learned...

How your feet should distribute weight, how your knees should track, or the optimal spine position to lift heavy things, then all those daily reps aren't neutral. They're not innocent.

Those daily reps are quietly reinforcing whatever pattern you default to — good or bad — one move at a time, all day, every day, for years.

So, the walk you already take? The stairs you already climb? The way you already sit down or stand up from your favorite chair? Every one of those is either working for your long-term physical health or working against it.

You're training your body right now, just by living in it.

Wise Body Basics makes sure those daily reps are working in your favor... While building the best possible foundation for bigger physical feats and challenges.

You need this if...

→ You do anything with a lot of reps or a lot of distance: Walking. Running. Cycling. Anything on repeat.

→ You ever add load (weight) — a suitcase, a barbell, a cooler, wheelbarrow full of fertilizer, a kid on your hip.

→ You want to move through daily life without your body holding you back — get on the floor, reach overhead, climb a ladder, twist around to grab something, kneel down to pick strawberries, say yes to dancing the night away.

→ You are still really excited about learning, growing, feeling beautiful and fully living this life and refuse to let "age" slow you down (or define you).

This isn't another workout to add to your list. These are the movement principles that inform every workout — and every hike, every lift, every ordinary day.

These basic movement principles encompass everything

Gets you: a spine that's actually long and stable, breathing that feels open and easy, and beautiful posture — without you having to think about it or force it.
  • Principle 5 — Sweet Spinal Mobility Helps prevent: disc bulges, pinched nerves, chronic stiffness, radiating numbness, compression-related degeneration. Gets you: full, easy range of motion in your torso, a spine that feels good and fluid, and real peace of mind about normal disc changes and care for your vertebrae over time.
  • Principle 6 — Multi-Dimensional Core Strength Helps prevent: disc-related injury, core weakness, pelvic floor dysfunction, low back instability, breath-holding strain patterns. Gets you: real core stability, fuller breath, more toned torso, a body that naturally holds long, tall posture.

Gets you: a neck that's strong and easeful in every direction, optimal head position, more relaxed shoulders and upper back, peace of mind.

  • Principle 8 — Winning Shoulder Shape Helps prevent: rotator cuff strain, shoulder instability, thoracic outlet–type compression, chest tightness, upper back and neck tension. Gets you: an open chest and upper back, fuller breath, posture that supports your head and spine.

  • Principle 9 — Upper Back Awareness Helps prevent: rotator cuff injury, upper back and neck strain, poor-lifting-mechanics back strain, shoulder impingement, scapular instability. Gets you: real stability and power through your shoulder blades and upper back, safer lifting mechanics, less strain on your lower back. Confidence when lifting/holding/carrying whatever you want!

Never let your body hold you back again

Education Is Empowerment

You won't learn these principles in school. Or at the doctor's office. Not even in most fitness classes.

But what happens the moment you actually understand them: you move differently. Immediately.

Not in six weeks — today. The way you stand in line. The way you get up from your chair. The way you take your next stroll down the street. The way you hold yourself when you walk into a party. And the way you approach your fitness practices.

And here's the bonus: understanding why your body needs you to follow these principles makes it so much easier to actually show up and practice.

Motivation follows understanding. Once movement finally makes sense, it stops feeling like a chore — and starts feeling like something you're doing for yourself, backed by real information.

This is your body. You deserve to understand the mechanics of how it works best.

Join Wise Body Basics to move the way you want to move, for decades to come, with confidence in your body. This is true freedom.
